“Chicken!  Veggies!  Soy!  Rice!”  Before the holidays, six Valkyries joined with the Edina Wise Guys after school program to package meals for Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), a non-profit hunger-relief organization based in Minnesota.  Christy, Katy, Veggie, Marta, Jenny, and Coach Jane worked alongside fourth and fifth graders from Edina, completing 57 cases of packaged meals.  Both the ruggers and the students were enthusiastic as they attached labels, measured, weighed, and boxed the food for shipment.  The group first learned about the history and mission of the company and then worked for two hours in the warehouse, dancing to music, pumping friends up, and congratulating each other on work well done.  At the end of the morning, the volunteers were able to taste the product they made, agreeing that it was delicious.  Each packaged meal from FMSC is nutritionally balanced, designed for easy consumption by malnourished children throughout the world, shipped to those countries that have the greatest need for hunger relief.  While Feed My Starving Children no longer takes walk-in volunteers to package meals, it does accept reservations for groups of 10 or more.  All involved agreed it was a great experience and look forward to returning again in the near future.  You can learn more about Feed My Starving Children at www.fmsc.org.

It's common knowledge that the Valkyries like to eat.  But, did you know that they like to feed others, too?  On September 26, the Valkyries went door to door in Falcon Heights, leaving notices for an upcoming food drive, sponsored by the North Como Presbyterian Church.  It was a beautiful day to be out in the neighborhood; the ruggers enjoyed spending time with teammates and meeting new people and animals.  Always competitors, the Valkyries quickly ran through their initial set of flyers, requesting the organizers print more.  The efforts of everyone involved paid off: 1,497 pounds of food were collected and donated to a local food shelf.  Nice work to everyone involved!

A periodic feature focusing on rugby intelligence found online

The US Women’s Rugby Foundation works to foster growth of women’s rugby in the United States and throughout the world.  The site seeks to serve as a central place where players, referees, coaches, supporters, and researchers can go to learn about all aspects of women’s rugby. While the site is not the definitive venue for all things related to women’s rugby, it does offer a number of engaging pages and is worth the time to browse.
